February Book Review

March 4, 2016 by Molly Leave a Comment

February was a month for love, and I LOVE reading! I picked some good ones last month.
1. The Rumor
I’ve read several of Elin Hilderband’s books, and they do not disappoint. They are intriguing and light all at the same time.
2. I Heart Paris
This was the sequel to I Heart New York, which I read in January. It was good, but not as good as the first book. The entire time I was reading it I kept thinking that it would make a good made for TV movie. Not a Hallmark movie, because there’s a little bit too much drinking and “lovin” for that. Not a Lifetime movie because there’s not enough strife. I used to love me some Lifetime movies in high school and college. And when you think about it, couldn’t every Lifetime movie really be titled “She Fought Alone” . . . or is that just me? Anyways, this book would make for a good, regular channel, Sunday night at 9pm movie. Do they even have those anymore?
3. The Lion’s Game
I mentioned this book in a post I did a few weeks ago. I read this book about 15 years ago and am re-reading it right now. I started it in February . . . and hope to finish it in March! It’s almost 800 pages, and lately any “spare” time I have seems to be devoted to a class I’m taking to keep my teacher certification current . . .or blogging!
It’s a riveting, on the edge of your seat page turner about terrorism in NYC pre 9/11. I do want to mention that this book is one of a series of books with the character John Corey. You do not need to have read the previous books to read The Lion’s Game, but there are sequels to this book, so make sure you read this one first.
And in the spirit of trying to include Lucy in my posts, I thought I’d include a few of her favorite books lately. I may have mentioned before that she is OBSESSED with books. She sits in front of her bookshelf all day long . . . taking them off the shelf . . . flipping through them . . . biting them. This is why we can’t check out library books yet. Whew doggie, once she’s out of the “everything in your mouth” phase, we are going to go gonzo at the library.
Speaking of the library, let me climb up onto my soapbox for a minute here before I continue. I’m not sure if this is the case at all libraries, but our local library does not limit the amount of books that can be checked out. I’ve seen mamas carrying out bagfuls before, and it does my teacher heart good! However, I’m at the library at least once a week to tutor and sometimes more if I take Lucy to look around. It breaks my heart when I see kiddos running up to their parents with five or six books they want to check out and their parents tell them to put all of them but one or two back. They are not asking for candy bars or video game . . . they want BOOKS! I don’t care if they only read one of them once they get home. . . I don’t care if they pile them up and sit on top of them to watch tv . . . your child wants books and the more books you have in your house the better. Too many books is better than no books. We need to do everything possible to foster a love of reading in kiddos as young as possible. I know it can be a pain to try and keep track of a dozen library books, but it can also help kiddos learn responsibility. . . or make a game out of it.  Just let them read!
Ok, enough of that. I could talk about kiddos and reading all day long. Since this post has ended up being longer than anticipated, I’ll just share three of Lucy’s current faves.
1. Highlights Hello
Lucy got this book subscription as a Christmas gift from her Grandma. We get a book once a month. They have cute little stories, rhymes, and vocabulary pictures. They aren’t board books, but are made out of heavy duty, laminated plastic. Lucy loves to bend it and chew on it, and I can easily wipe it off!
2. Biscuit’s Pet & Play Easter
Biscuit is just the cutest little doggie ever. And I can’t seem to avoid the children’s holiday book stand at Target, so we picked this one up last week. It’s super cute and has a lot of different textures to feel.
3. You are My Cupcake
Lucy loves this book, and so do I! I’ve probably read it to her at least 100 times. It’s short, sweet, and adorable. One of the pages says, “You are my chubby little pumpkin.” That’s my favorite, because it always reminds me of the greatest picture ever taken of Lucy:
And if it had a page that said, “You are my grumpy little pumpkin” I would think of this picture:

Happy Reading!
If you’re reading anything good that I should know about, feel free to leave a comment so that everyone can take advantage of the suggestion!
XOXO

Classroom Before and After

Happy First Day of School! I’m coming up for a very quick breath of air to share my classroom before and after pics. I signed my contract at 3:30pm last Tuesday . . . that’s one week ago today. There was a lot of excitement and a lot of tears. In the blink of one […]

Mrs. Kissel: 2nd Grade Teacher!

Surprise! There are three Kissel ladies going back to school this year. Emily starts Kindergarten, Lucy’s in 2nd grade…and I’m coming out of retirement to teach second grade!!! (Not Lucy’s class!) I was hired Monday afternoon, and the amount of overwhelm and range of emotions I’ve felt since then has been, well, overwhelming! To those […]
